About a month ago an oil sheen was reported in the river downstream from the flying j, off I-80 by Avoca.
The DNR has responded and opened an ongoing investigation. The information so far from officials is that the oil-water separator, required in all gas station drainage systems, has been leaking into its storm water retention basin that drains into the river. It is unknown for how long the gas station has been discharging oil into the Nishnabotna.
The discharge was described as very extensive by DNR officials. The discharging has been stopped and cleanup is ongoing with absorbent materials in the ditch and in the river. Flying J is being required to remove all of the soil and contaminated water from the holding pond. The liquids are being taken to the Denison wastewater treatment facility for processing.
The Flying J is listed with the DNR as a LUST site, Leaking Underground Storage Tank, because of underground discharge from an event back in 2013.
Facilities that are allowed to use our Waters as a sewer systems are required to have an NPDS, national pollution discharge system, permit. Flying J does not have this permit. These permits are required for many industrial and commercial operations including feedlots over 1,000 head.
This offense to all of us was only discovered because someone was out on the water and noticed it. We strongly urge everyone to become aware of how our waters are being misused and to report violations to the DNR and spread the word. They are staff and fund limited and need our help.
